March 19, 2025

BSFA posted the short list for their annual awards and “Songs of the Snow Whale” written by K.A. Teryna and translated from Russian by me is a finalist this year! I’m super excited for the recognition this story is receiving. Huge thanks to Ann Vandermeer who acquired it for Reactor!

K.A. Teryna’s English language short story collection will be released late this year and I expect we’ll be able to share the very cool cover in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Meantime, you can read “Songs of the Snow Whale” here:

At the edge of the world, on the island of R’evava in the Arctic Ocean, a blizzard rages outside as five people gathered in a small weather station pass the time telling each other stories while they wait for a break in the storm

A Brief History of Russian Science Fiction

May 1, 2021

My essay, “A Brief History of Russian Science Fiction” has gone live as part of the Clarkesworld magazine May issue. You can read it here.

It is, of course, only possible to scratch the surface of the subject in so brief a piece. I’ve tried to go for a birds-eye view and focus on the big picture stuff as it attempts to cover 100+ years of history.

Meantime, I continue to do my small part to share some of the great Russian language short fiction with Anglophone readers. There are several pieces slated for publication in top tier magazines over the next 9 months, and several more currently out on submission.

I’m in talks with several editors and anthologists who would like to consider translations for their upcoming projects, and always happy to talk to others. If you’d like help connecting with Russian authors, a reprint recommendation, or need an original piece translated for your project, do not hesitate to reach out.

Translations!

July 2, 2019

If you enjoy reading Russian SF in translations, and particularly Russian SF translated by Yours Truly, boy have I got a bunch of treats for you!

This week the latest issue of F&SF releases and it contains my translation of “The Slave” by Andrej Kokoulin. It should just be hitting the shelves. The story is dark and cuts deep psychologically as you would expect from a good Russian tale.

My latest translation of one of K. A. Teryna’s stories is also currently live at Samovar. They published the translation of “Morpheus” alongside the original Russian text. There’s also a translator interview with me live now, and an interview with K. A. Teryna will be forthcoming as well.

Tatiana Ivanova’s “The Scheduled War” is in the current issue of Amazing Stories. And finally, my translation of Oleg Divov’s “Americans on the Moon” is in the current issue of Future SF, which you can buy now or read the story for free on the website in a few weeks.
